2022 NFL Free Agency Layout Project: James Winston to the Steelers, Chris Godwin to the Lions and 30 other moves

Fictional drafts are in vogue in the NFL off-season, but all too often they overlook the big event that precedes the draft: the free agency! Veterans additions have the potential to displace team project boards and fill big gaps in the list in both the short and long term.

With that in mind, we decided it would be fun to apply the fake draft formula to a free agency for NFL 2022 that doesn’t get what it deserves. What if the veterans market was held as a draft, with all 32 teams choosing available players based on their record? What if, instead of bidding on bargains, you could just “draw up” free agent rights for the upcoming season? It’s pointless, yes, but it’s also a fun exercise to identify the most valuable free agents of the year, as well as the most important needs of teams out of season.

See our free agency model for 2022, including the actual order for the first round, below!

Note: The following players have been excluded from the exercise as they are expected and / or reported to receive the franchise label or re-sign with their current team: Packers WR Davante Adams, Chargers WR Mike Williams, Chiefs OT Orlando Brown Jr. ., and Bengals S Jesse Bates III.

A long-term playmaker would be really good for Trevor Lawrence, but QB’s defense is paramount. With a left-footed shot of Cam Robinson coming on the market, Armstead can step in and give them an elite upgrade.

If QB with a big name was on the market, they could consider it. Instead, they step up the uninspiring attack with this year’s best veteran with skills. Even after an injury, Godwin drew juice from level 1.

Few defenders have been around the ball like Jackson, and Houston desperately needs playmakers on both sides of the ball. GM Nick Caserio knows him from New England and he would give the new coach Love Smith a real cover.

GM Joe Douglas would prefer to invest elsewhere, but they have two players in the first round, and Williams is worth the salary they gave Marcus May for 2021. Their secondary moment would be improved by his reach.

Reaching for a narrow end? Not when the main priority is to calm down QB Daniel Jones. Evan Engram has to leave, and rising star Schultz could serve as Jones’ number one target in Brian Dabol’s restructured attack.

QB is the main problem, but they also mistaken the O-line. Sherf is 30 years old with a history of injuries, but it would be a monumental improvement to their interior, paving the way for better results on the ground and in the air.

The Bucs would like to keep Jenson, but they can’t afford everyone. Daboll, meanwhile, can actually make a real assessment of Jones by giving up a solid blocker to join a group with improved skills.

After Dante Fowler Jr. left, they still have a big hole to fill on the edge, where they have long struggled to find stable production. Adhering to Arthur Smith’s goal of taking advantage of Matt Ryan’s closing window, this is a quick fix game.

After proposing to Von Miller to stock up on elections for the 2021 draft, they could use a first-class rusher against Bradley Chub. Jones may be a shorter-term decision, but he remains a Pro Bowl starter and they are watching big changes in QB veterans.

Joe Douglas poured money into the position in 2021 with Corey Davis, but Zach Wilson still needs goal number 1. A-Rob could be the man to spend a year down with the Bears, giving New York a pair of big starters outside.

Ron Rivera is in dire need of an experienced QB upgrade, but this year’s veteran class is weak. Mathieu, meanwhile, would bring all sorts of fierce flexibility to the porous secondary, which could lead to Landon Collins coming out as a victim of the hat.

A potential theft beyond the top 10, the 25-year-old Davis will immediately take over as the top corner of the Vikings, giving new coach Kevin O’Connell a proven, title-winning building block for defense after Mike Zimmer.

Funny as it may be, this would be the perfect place for Odell Beckham Jr. in alternate reality, where he’s not divorcing Cleveland. However, Gallup is great as a promising external target for a host corps that can only boast of an aging Jarvis Landry.

Calais Campbell could easily secure another short-term deal here, but Ogbah offers a long-term rise and some emerging passes for a defensive front that lacks steady pressure.

With the release of Derek Barnett, the Eagles were able to switch from one early pass to another. The 25-year-old Landry stood in Tennessee as a 3-4 OLB, but Jonathan Gannon can use it creatively as a much-needed long-term starter.

GM Howie Roseman isn’t a man who spends too much on a midfielder, but he’s not spending enough on it now to the point that he needs a playmaker like Campbell did for the Packers in 2021. Suddenly, Philly’s defense seems tougher.

Poor protection when running? Jones, who has quietly emerged as a strong man on the acclaimed 49ers defensive front, would be a big help.

They could use QB, LT and WR aid more, but that’s for long-term value. At 26, Gesitsky is still a rising playmaker who can help make up for Adam Troutman’s average output. They recover, so it is much better than the interval.

19. Orly: WR Odel Beckham Jr.

The suit may seem like a winning addition, but he looked very energetic at the age of 29 before entering the Super Bowl. The Eagles already have DeVonta Smith, but they could really use another starter, no matter who’s in QB.

It makes too much sense and can work in real life. Winston may be a pilot for a year more than a real answer, but his big hand will give the Steelers at least a useful option in a position without a sure successor.

Mac Jones can use more weapons, and JC Jackson, entering the market, makes them needy in the corner. But Gregory is the type of Plug-and-Play pass rusher who can make his D-line ferocious with Matt Juden.

Casey Hayward Jr. is coming to market and their defense can use improvements almost anywhere. Gilmore, meanwhile, knows new coach Josh McDaniels of New England and would give the Raiders a cover man.

23. Cardinals: DE Calais Campbell

Meeting! And that would really help Arizona, as JJ Watt often clashed and Chandler Jones mocked elsewhere. Campbell is obviously a short-term solution, but his large body still works in front, both inside and out.

They have many other needs (OG, WR, TE, LB), but with Randy Gregory mocked in a new home and Demark Lawrence coming out of a year full of injuries, Clowns will give them an impressive short-term starter for their game “D.”

An angle or receiver would be smarter and more sprawling, but Tomlinson is a solid insider who could help Josh Allen stand up for the inevitable Buffalo playoffs over the next few years.

Tennessee is betting on overcoming the hump in the near future, with Ryan Tanehill below center, and that requires an improved front end. Taylor Leanon is a potential victim of the cap, while Brown is still a left attack of Pro Bowl caliber when he is healthy.

An unspectacular choice of a free agent from the first round, if there ever was one, but what will you do? The Bucs need QB like no other and Teddy, while better suited for the lead role, is the latest proven hand on the market.

Randall Cobb is aging and expensive. Aaron Rodgers wants to win now. Why not pair Davante Adams and Alan Lazard with a prototype target with a large body for one or three more playoff series with the current setting?

He is not necessarily an elite interior man, but Daniels will offer the new coach Mike McDaniel a ready starter – very important for a team that intends to build from the trenches outside.

An attacking pass like Haason Reddick would be good, but since Tyrann Mathieu and Charvarius Ward are both coming on the market, their secondary player desperately needs some depth of play.

31. Bengali: C Bradley Bozeman

Joe Barrow needs more help up front. This has been clear for a long time. Bozeman did appear at the heart of the Ravens line in 2021, so he would fit in just like an O-line quarterback.

32. Lions: OLB Haason Reddick

A potential theft at the back end, Reddick is just 27 years old with 23.5 bags in the last two years. His short-term and long-term potential will give Dan Campbell’s defense the much-needed impetus.

Jets’ Robert Saleh pours fuel into raging Kyle Hamilton debate

INDIANAPOLIS – One of the big debates about the NFL draft for the Jets this offseason is whether to take Kyle Hamilton for the safety of Notre Dame number 4 as the overall choice.

Hamilton is clearly one of the best players in this year’s draft, but taking safety in the top 10 can be risky. Jets fans still have scars from Jamal Adams’ 6th draft as the overall pick in 2017. Adams proved to be a good player, but one who wanted loads of money in a no-premium position. This led to the Jets exchanging him for the Seahawks.

Jets coach Robert Saleh did not specifically comment on Hamilton, but did not rule out the possibility of safety in the top 10.

Adjust the fake drafts accordingly.

“It depends on how good he is,” Saleh told reporters at Zoom on Wednesday. “I call them unicorns. I would never want to take a midfielder in the first round, but Tremaine Edmunds was sitting there and I was wearing his shirt on the draft. He is a unicorn in the world of midfielders. It’s the same with the fuse.

“I remember there was a tough discussion about Derwin James and the man is phenomenal. You never want to say no to any position group. Obviously there are first-class positions when you look at the quarterback and the final roster, the corner and the O line. These are easy to book, but you can never say no to a unicorn and someone who has great talent and obviously the best possible player you can take at the moment. You never want to be stubborn in your thought process. To answer your question about taking safety, if it is worthy of it, it will definitely be a discussion.

Saleh also commented on several other positions that the Jets can handle this off-season.

Regarding the final rushers that correspond to his system: “I think the pass rusher is universal. Your ability to win one on one. Your ability to win in three ways – to win with speed, to win with counter moves, to win with strength. There are some really great prospects at the top of the draft. I realized that there is no such thing as a sliding name like Nick Boza or Chase Young, but these guys are really good. They are really, very good. It will be exciting to keep diving deep into all these guys about the direction we are going. It is also very deep. Don’t count those guys who are late first, early second too. It’s an exciting band to watch. “

Regarding their ability to fill the difficult space: “We feel good about it. We had the feeling that our narrow ends did everything possible this year. There were some injuries there. Tyler [Kroft] missed a few games. [Ryan Griffin] missed the last half of the year. It really helps everyone, in terms of playing with running and then adding weapons. I don’t care where you get the weapon. There is an old saying that you are as good as your third successor. Well, that doesn’t mean three wide receivers. These are three guys with skills. Adding to this aspect, when you have guys who can win one-on-one coverage in a critical situation, whether it’s a tight end, back or receiver, it all helps the quarterback. It is obvious that there are some players in the free agency in this thin area. There are some really good ones in the draft. It’s just a matter of evaluating and continuing to go through this process to see the direction we’re going. “

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich will sell Chelsea amid the war in Ukraine

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich said on Wednesday that he would sell the Chelsea football club in England, a dramatic move that comes in response to outrage over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, Abramovich announced that he had instructed the famous team to create a foundation that would use all the net proceeds from the sale of Chelsea to “benefit all the victims of the war in Ukraine.”

Abramovich said in a statement: “As I said, I have always made decisions with the best interests of the club. Therefore, in the current situation, I decided to sell the club, as I believe that this is in the best interests of the club, the fans, the employees, as well as the sponsors and partners of the club. “

The announcement of the sale came less than a week after the billionaire said he was transferring control of the club to trustees of a charity, and after calls that Abramovich was facing sanctions from the United Kingdom.

Abramovich bought the London-based Chelsea in 2003. During his tenure, Chelsea won seasonal titles in the English Premier League, the Premier League, five times and won the prestigious FA Cup as many times. Chelsea are currently in third place in the Premier League, behind leaders Manchester City and Liverpool.

Earlier Wednesday, the Biden administration said it had formed a new task force to impose sanctions on the United States and its allies against Russian officials and oligarchs who helped the war in Ukraine, which began with President Vladimir Putin.

Tom Telesco: With QB on rookie deal and space constraint, we can attack differently this year

NFL Combine

With one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the game, the Chargers were disappointed when they finished the season at 9-8 and missed the playoffs.

But the window of the Los Angeles championship needs to be open. Justin Herbert is not even eligible for a contract extension before the 2022 season. And the Chargers have more than $ 56 million in spending space.

With that in mind, general manager Tom Telesco told the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday that he plans to use those resources to put the team in the best possible position for the championship.

“We try to be aggressive every year, it just depends on what our resources are and what our circumstances are at the moment,” Telesco told Southern California News Group’s Gilbert Manzano. “You just have to attack in different ways. This year we can attack a little differently, because we have a lot of space for covers and we have a quarterback on a rookie deal. But you know, the goal is the same every year. The goal is to challenge and compete for the championship.

“But your circumstances are changing when it comes to the lid space, as far as your list is, where is your quarterback, do you have a quarterback?” isn’t it It’s just different, but it doesn’t change our goal to enter the championship. “

Chargers came out 69-76 with two post-season appearances in Telesco’s nine seasons as GM

Phil Mickelson receives a $ 6 million bonus from the “greedy” PGA Tour

Just weeks after comments surfaced in which Phil Mickelson said he was involved with human rights violators for the “disgusting greed” of the PGA Tour, the PGA Tour gave Mickelson a $ 6 million bonus.

Mickelson received the award for second place in the first annual program to influence the players of the Tour, which rewards players for their ability to engage with fans. Tiger Woods won the grand prize of $ 8 million, the Tour announced on Wednesday morning. The program seems to have started in response to the Saudi Golf League, with its sweat rising from $ 40 million to $ 50 million in 2022.

The money will come as an unforeseen income for Mickelson, who has been bleeding sponsors lately. Workday, KPMG and Amstel Light ended their relationship with the six-time big winner, while Callaway Golf paused. The American Express event also missed Mickelson as host.

Mickelson told golf writer Alan Shipnuk that he was at least looking into the Saudi regime’s human rights history because getting involved with them was a way to put pressure on Tour.

“They’re scary mothers to mess with,” Mickelson said. “We know they killed [Washington Post reporter and U.S. record Jamal] Kashogi and have a terrible experience in human rights. They execute people there for being gay. Knowing all this, why even consider it? Because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the way the PGA Tour works. ”

Reaction to Mickelson’s comments was swift and immediate, with other golfers withdrawing from the Saudi League and Rory McIlroy calling Mickelson “naive, selfish, selfish, ignorant.”

Mickelson issued a long statement after Shipnuck made his comments public, apologizing and claiming that the conversation had not been recorded, which Shipnuck said was incorrect.

The 51-year-old man also said he planned to take a break from golf. It is unclear when Mickelson plans to return to the course.

Mickelson stated in December that he won the first PIP, which turned out to be incorrect.

Kyle Rudolph announces release from New York Giants

INDIANAPOLIS – New York Giants release secret end Kyle Rudolph, the veteran announced on social media on Wednesday.

“It is certainly not the year that any of us expected, but a year that we will never forget,” Rudolf wrote in his publications. “… Thanks to everyone in the building who welcomed and helped this old man who had to learn everything again about a new organization.”

Rudolph has sent a message to ESPN’s Adam Shefter that he is not retiring and intends to play next season.

The 32-year-old Rudolph made just 26 catches in 257 yards with a touchdown in his only year with the Giants. It was one of the least productive seasons of his career, in which he made two Pro Bowls with the Minnesota Vikings in 2012 and ’17.

His release was a fairly easy decision for the Giants and a new regime led by general manager Joe Schoen, who said on Tuesday that the team would have to make “difficult” decisions to go below the pay ceiling.

Rudolph had to count $ 7.4 million against the limit this year. The Giants save $ 5 million with this move, even if it includes $ 2.4 million of dead money.

New York will have to deal with the limited position in the free agency and / or project. Evan Engram is also scheduled to be a free agent.

Rudolf’s signing has been in question from the start by former general manager Dave Gettleman. After agreeing to a two-year deal worth $ 12 million last offseason, it was revealed that Rudolph would need surgery for a leg injury that limited him last season.

However, the Giants decided to abide by the contract and Rudolf missed the whole spring and most of the summer. He never made it to New York, as he seems to have lost a step while struggling to create a split – an average of just 2.9 yards per split, according to NextGen statistics. He averaged 4.0 yards and 3.4 yards away in the previous two seasons.

Rudolph, who went to Notre Dame, had spent the previous 10 seasons with the Vikings. Only his new season and 2014 – when he missed almost half a year due to injuries – was less productive than last season.

He has 479 catches for 4745 yards and 49 touchdowns in his professional career.

I don’t understand DeAndre Jordan’s things

I usually avoid opinions these days, but when I saw the news that DeAndre Jordan was being chased by the Sixers, it worried me, maybe more than it should have. I have a problem with it, but not necessarily for reasons you might think at first.

When the news of Jordan’s pursuit of the Sixers came, it puzzled me. Of course, Jordan is an NBA veteran, and that’s what the Sixers have reportedly been on the market for: a big one that can set screens and catch lobes. This, in theory, is true. However, Jordan is at the end of his career and it can be said that he should have been out of the NBA for two or three years.

Let me say that Jordan himself is not what I have a problem with with these rumors. I understand that Doc Rivers may not trust Charles Bassie, a rookie, to support Embiid for a potential championship. I realized that Paul Reed had his ups and downs this season. I also understand that Paul Milsap, who is 37 years old and 6 feet 7, is probably not the answer either. Willie Cowley-Stein has not played an NBA game in months.

My problems stem from what the Sixers didn’t do, not what they could do. Let me explain.

When the Sixers swapped Andre Drummond, it left me with a bit of personal excitement. There was nothing against Drummond, who was really good at his role for the team. In fact, I think most Sixers fans can honestly say they miss it. Personally, I was thrilled to see that Reed was given a chance with a new opportunity. James Harden had a history of centering around him, and I thought Paul might be the man to be given some time.

We had a chance to see Reed in action at different times of the season, where he showed some impressive flashes. One of the most important moments for him was to compete against Demar DeRozan and Janis Adetokunmpo when the Sixers had problems with COVID. He didn’t stop them in any way, but he stayed in front of them and made them work for their staff – which is all you can ask for.

We had a chance to see Reed run shortly after the trading deadline, playing a combined 34 minutes in three games. There were mixed results, but the small sample size showed some acceptable minutes, which led to some intrigue. Harden, as you all know, was not available for these games with a hamstring injury. It wasn’t until the All Star break that we even managed to see Harden on the floor with one of the Sixers’ backups.

Scroll forward so far, and it’s obvious that we’ll just never see Harden and Reed play a minute of basketball together, at least for this season – which I just don’t understand at all.

Harden works best with large rims that can place screens and roll hard toward the rim; a mold that fits all Bassey, Reed and Cauley-Stein. So why not give them a chance? After all, these next 20 or more Sixers games are experimenting on the go to see what works best for this team before the postseason. The Sixers lacked a long-term response to the position of reserve center for the entire Embiid era in Philadelphia, and it seems that this problem will remain after this season.

The lack of Reed’s situation has nuances of Richan Holmes’ time in Philly when he was Sixer. Holmes showed flashes, but never got the chance to really solidify his role with the Sixers before being changed for financial reasons. He has since proven himself and recently signed a major expansion with the Kings. I’m not saying Reed is the next Holmes. Nothing is a given and it is far from guaranteed that Reed or any of the current centers on the list can provide average minutes at best.

Here’s what I mean: I would say that not having an answer is worse than having a bad answer to the Sixers’ big backup situation. Having three or four question marks behind Embiid is a serious concern.

It’s one thing if the Sixers play Reed or one of the big ones and it just doesn’t work out. Then I think signing Jordan or some other veteran center is very justified. However, Reed defended himself every time he was on the court this season. The minutes, though inconsistent, were not a nightmare – and that in itself is worth a look if you’re trying to find a long-term answer behind Embiid.

One of Reid’s biggest reasons for not being on the court was that the Sixers had to leave room for Simmons, who is long gone. Reed’s offense is still very gross, but he is more than capable of adjusting screens and catching lobes. The bar is significantly reduced in terms of what is required of him.

Now it looks like the Sixers will eventually sign Deandre Jordan, making him the fifth center on the team’s roster. The use of five places on the full-time list of four centers with huge question marks hanging over their heads is a huge concern for any struggling team – especially considering that there are other holes in this list of Sixers that could be overcome.

Although I’m not in the mood for it, I hope I’m wrong about Jordan. Harden has a history of raising his teammates and this may be the case with Jordan. He also spent his best years under Doc Rivers, albeit a few years ago. The signatures of Dwight Howard and Andre Drumman initially raised some questions, and they were fine. These are all fair points.

Jordan will probably have an average of only ten or fifteen minutes at most in the post-season, and all these minutes will probably be next to James Harden. If Jordan plays acceptable defense, sets up screens and catches a lobe or two, it won’t be a big deal.

However, if the Sixers get DeAndre Jordan, who has been negatively labeled by NBA fans and analysts over the past few years, things could get ugly quickly. If that happens, the Sixers won’t have an answer in their highlights because they just chose not to find it.

Jaylan Brown Injury Update: Celtics Star Turns Ankle Over Hawks to Overcome Next Hawks

The Boston Celtics suffered a blow when Jaylan Brown relinquished a 107-98 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday with an ankle sprain. It was Brown dropped out by the end of the matchbut the good news is that he didn’t seem too lame as he made his way to the locker room on his own.

This is where the injury happened.

Celtics Name Udoka then examined Brown’s ankle.

“He unscrewed it. “Obviously there is a little swelling and soreness,” Udoka said. “He tried to give back experience and wanted to come back and play, but we just thought about the big picture and where we are this season, and be smart. We’ll know more in the next few days, but he tried to try it and it still hurts and swells. ”

Although there is no supply schedule, Udoka remains optimistic, this will not be a long-term problem for Brown.

“He left on his own and then tried to get in from behind, so you don’t hope. But we will evaluate it in the next few days. It doesn’t look like that, but you never know how it can change overnight with swelling and pain. ”

Obviously, the Celtics can’t stay long without Brown. Again, the injury didn’t seem too serious, but even a week or more would be difficult for Boston. The Celtics are tied with the Raptors in the losing streak for No. 6 so far, with both teams in action and the playoffs on the other side.
