The Last of Us Part II Remastered: The Burden of Vengeance

Almost three and a half years after the release of The Last of Us Part II, the title is now entitled to a version optimized for the PlayStation 5 with improved graphics, new tables and a brand new game mode.

Joel and Ellie, the only people who had developed immunity to the Cordyceps epidemic threatening humanity, traveled halfway across the United States to join the Fireflies, a group of resistance fighters, in the first “The Last of Us.” When Joel learned that the only way to find a cure would mean the death of his young charge, he caused a veritable bloodbath to save her, and the two returned to his brother Tommy's enclave in Wyoming.

Four years have passed when The Last of Us Part II begins. Without giving away too much of the story, the past eventually catches up with Joel, and as the plot begins, an event as intense as it is tragic occurs that will shock players and deeply disrupt the peaceful little lives of the survivors in Jackson. Seeking revenge against those responsible, Ellie then leaves the fortified village to make a dangerous journey to Seattle, where an organization called the Washington Liberation Front is hiding to settle their scores.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered The Burden ofPicture from the game

Unlike the previous part, where we mainly played as Joel, The Last of Us Part II Remastered introduces Ellie, with whom we spend most of the game. We also occasionally play as Abby, a brand new character member of the Washington Liberation Front, which allows us to better understand the not so different motivations of the two main protagonists. For the rest, the developers have not changed much in an already successful formula and we find essentially the same mechanics in this sequel.

Even if we have a respectable arsenal (revolvers, rifles, shotguns, bows, grenades, etc.), ammunition is scarce and stealth is often the best approach to face the dangers our journey presents. Since the infected are blind and move through noise, and the groups of people outnumber them, it is often better to crouch and approach the enemy from behind to eliminate them without noise and avoid damage. “Alert the rest of the pack.” You can also throw rocks or bottles to create a distraction and sneak through an area without having to fight.

Exploration is an integral part of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and it's advisable to search the post-apocalyptic environments and derelict buildings along the way. Different raw materials are harvested there and used to make items that are essential for survival. Alcohol and rags are used for medicine kits or Molotov cocktails. A blade and tape transform into a surin, useful for stabbing an enemy. Sugar and explosives make smoke bombs, and an explosive combined with a blade makes a pipe bomb.

The accumulated stimulants allow us to improve our skills, maximize our health points and increase the effectiveness of healing sets or our mastery of firearms. Getting your hands on training manuals will open new branches in the skill tree. The scrap collected is used to modify your weapons when you find a workbench, and you can improve the rate of fire, the stability of the rifles or the capacity of the magazine, etc. There are also plenty of collectibles in this sequel, although the copies of the Savage Starlight comic from the previous game have been replaced with superhero cards.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered The Burden ofPicture from the game

Although the release gap isn't as big as between the first The Last of Us and its remastered version released last year, the graphics in this sequel have still been significantly improved to take advantage of the PS5's power, and the graphics are some of what they are currently looks best on console. Winter landscapes covered with breathtakingly realistic snow, the flashlight beam illuminating dust particles suspended in the air, the texture of dirty and worn clothing – the depictions help create believable and immersive post-apocalyptic environments.

The developers haven't just given the experience a new coat of paint. We also find three new tables that were removed from the original version and are playable in this version. The biggest innovation is the roguelike game mode called No Return, in which you have to survive as long as possible against increasingly numerous waves of infected. This time, owners of the PS4 version of The Last of Us Part II can update the game for around ten dollars, which was not the case with the remastered version of the previous work.

By improving the graphics and adding new content, developers at Naughty Dog have managed to improve an experience that was already close to perfect, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered is nothing short of a masterpiece worth playing at least once must have your life.

Odysseus Probe: Humanity must learn “many things” about the Moon in order to fly to Mars

The Odyssus probe's mission to the moon is very important, says astrophysicist Robert Lamontagne, who believes that humanity can “learn many things” from Earth's natural satellite.

“What is particularly interesting in the environment where the probe landed is the presence of water in the form of ice. The idea is to explore this region at the south pole of the Moon in preparation for future missions in which we will return astronauts to the Moon,” he explains.

In the medium term, the goal is to prepare a permanent installation on the lunar soil or in orbit around the natural satellite. However, the ultimate goal is to prepare space missions that would go much further.

“It is a first step towards the great adventure of the planet Mars,” says Robert Lamontagne.

“To ultimately arrive on Mars, we must learn to live independently in space,” he adds.

Scientists need to find a way to extract water, currently in the form of ice, to drink and grow food. They then need to be able to release oxygen in order to have access to breathing air and use hydrogen as fuel.

The astrophysicist believes that it is also important to “learn how to create an environment in which we multiply the expertise that will be required for a very long journey to Mars, a journey that will most likely last between one and three years “So we have to learn to live in space, just like we learn to live on Earth.”

China announces names of manned lunar exploration vehicles

China announces names of manned lunar exploration vehicles

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced on Saturday the names of new vehicles for future manned lunar exploration missions.

The new manned spacecraft is named Mengzhou, meaning “dream ship,” reflecting that manned lunar exploration makes the Chinese people's space dream come true and ushers in a new journey in space adventure, the CMSA said.

The lunar lander is called Lanyue, which means “kissing the moon,” a term that appears in a poem by the late Chairman Mao Zedong. The word symbolizes the Chinese people's confidence in exploring the universe, the agency said.

The names were selected from nearly 2,000 suggestions solicited from the public.

China plans to land its taikonauts on the moon before 2030 to conduct scientific exploration. It is planned to launch two launch vehicles to each send a manned spacecraft and a lunar lander into lunar orbit. The spacecraft and lunar lander will come together and dock with each other, after which the taikonauts will enter the lander.

So far, the research and development of Mengzhou, Lanyue and the Long March-10 launch vehicle have gone smoothly, the CMSA said. (Photo/VCG)

Intel pushes its Xeons to draw conclusions about companies

No one will say otherwise: Intel has missed the wave of artificial intelligence that has swept the semiconductor industry over the past decade, despite some efforts in this area. The company is now working intensively to catch up on the issue with Nvidia. With the Gaudi accelerators developed by Habana Labs, with its GPUs for data centers and of course with the eternal Xeon. On the occasion of the WAICF event, which took place in Cannes on February 8th and 9th, Intel launched a large-scale seduction campaign around the contribution of its CPUs to AI.

Position yourself in the inference market

According to Lisa Spelman, corporate VP and GM responsible for Xeon products and solutions, “Intel chips offer better performance for inference.” A not insignificant comment: Inference now represents the majority of the computational needs compared to model training, a sign ensure that these technologies are mature and are now being put into production on a large scale.

It must also be said that the battle in data centers is also against AMD and its Epyc CPUs, whose market shares have increased rapidly over the last five years. If Intel remains dominant with around 75% of the market, it can't be complacent. It therefore makes sense to position yourself as a leader in inference.

A partnership strategy

Lisa Spelman provided an overview of Intel's commercial roadmap, which includes increasing partnerships with customers such as OVHcloud that are launching Xeon-based AI services. “OVH does this to provide local support and respond to certain challenges, particularly with regard to data regulation,” she explains. On this subject, Thierry Souche, technical director of the French provider, indicates that OVHcloud servers will be available later this year with 5th generation Xeon processors.

Another partner, Iterate.ai, is a company focused on scaling generative AI in the enterprise. It has a low-code solution called Interplay. It is currently deployed on around 4,000 edge servers running Xeon and also provides services for vertical industries. Using fast food as an example, Lisa Spelman explores how Iterate.ai and its Interplay solution – running on Xeon – can improve the fast food drive-thru experience.

Iterate.ai uses a large language model combined with speech recognition to help its customers improve the accuracy of their orders. While voice recognition can be used as a secondary source to support on-site employees, it can also help fast food restaurants deal with staffing shortages and peak traffic times.

The Netflix case

Netflix is one of its renowned customers. It uses artificial intelligence in many ways: recommendation engines, suggestions on what to watch next based on your history, etc. The Californian giant also uses AI to improve customer experience and better manage content delivery and network costs. Using Xeon processors would have doubled the performance compared to another solution.

However, the entertainment giant also uses GPUs, with Lisa Spelman admitting, “There is a portion of their AI workloads that they use GPUs for,” before adding, “But our goal is to enable them to make maximum use of their Xeon infrastructure . “Scale it out before you have to invest in an expensive GPU solution.”

Analysis and monitoring of athletes with Xeon and Gaudi

Intel has also partnered with a company called ai.io, which specializes in tracking sports performance, using Xeon CPUs and Gaudi accelerators to improve tracking of Olympic athletes in 3D. The solution is aimed at high-performance athletes and generates complex analyzes that allow them to improve their performance and adapt their training dynamics.

The company is currently working with many athletes preparing for the upcoming Olympics and its goal is to be able to provide them with a 3D response in real time. Because rendering can take a long time, ai.io relies on Gaudi accelerators, “allowing them to provide this capability at a lower total cost of ownership, whereas they previously worked and scaled on GPUs.”

AI PCs, the future of office computing?

Lisa Spelman also recalled the company's investments in developing the AI PC category. This relatively vague marketing term refers to personal computers with better computing capabilities for AI. Intel can count on Movidius' IP, which has been integrated into its CPUs since Meteor Lake. The entire “Wintel” ecosystem is on board, of course Microsoft, but also the major PC manufacturers. Intel estimates that around 70% of PCs will be “AI PCs” by 2028.

Phind-70B closes the code quality gap with GPT-4 Turbo while running four times faster. It is available for free testing

My opinion? I think the term “artificial intelligence” is misleading as it is still a mathematical model. In a simple test of a game of tic-tac-toe (a game that usually ends in a draw), I beat all of the best-performing AI models by systematically playing the same sequence of moves. And they were completely unable to adjust their strategy even when given the strategy I was using.

In a second test, based on words intended to represent their strength, they were unable to check the application of two simple rules of a word order game: the first letter of the given word must be identical to the last letter of the previous word and the given word may still be never been stated before.

So if you don't anticipate all possible cases and train them on them as soon as they leave their data set, it's ruined. And since technological, energy, infrastructural and climatic limitations make it impossible to specify all possible real-world cases, this “*AI*” will remain an approximation and simulation of the intelligence of even a mouse. Unless they specialize in a specific and limited area.

Maybe a new technology seems to be able to really learn and really understand the context and reasoning. But it is certainly not a technology based on binary and silicon, since the world is analog and not digital.

The Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 15 ticks almost all the boxes: its impressive body makes no compromises, neither in terms of performance nor autonomy, and the screen is very well finished, with faithful colors and an effective anti-reflective treatment. At this point, we simply regret that the resolution of the panel is lower than that of the best laptops.

The Zenbook 14 Oled is the first laptop PC with the Intel Core Ultra processor, for which it serves as a beautiful showcase. The OLED panel is still pleasant to look at despite excessive reflections. The versatility of the Core Ultra 7's performance even allows for some video gaming adventures. One downside is that the placement of most ports on the right side of the PC is unsuitable for right-handed users.

What to do before selling or giving away your old phone?

Your phone contract is expiring and you plan to sell it on or give it away when you get a new one? Here's what you need to do before abandoning your device.

1. Make sure the phone is unlocked

If you bought your phone before 2017, it could be blocked. That means it will be impossible to use it with any provider other than the one that originally sold it to you, be it Bell, Rogers, Videotron or even Fido.

Since 2017, providers are not only no longer allowed to lock devices, but they also have to allow you to unlock them for free.

2. Create a backup of your device

Backup is an important step to keep the data on your phone. Whether it's your contacts, your photos or even your messages.

This backup can then be transferred to your new device.

3. Clear phone data

To ensure that the person who receives your old phone does not have access to your data, you must delete it by resetting it.

“Resetting the phone will restore its basic settings, which are the same as those on the day of purchase. This process will delete all data stored on the phone. “It will be like new when it leaves the factory,” says the website of French telecommunications company Orange.

Note that this process may take a long time and the phone must be fully charged or plugged in.
