Why this French healthcare giant doesn't believe in connected rings

When asked by our colleagues at 01net, Withings says that connected rings are “no more interesting” for users than connected watches.

While the connected ring space is booming, a French brand synonymous with connected health has decided not to get involved. In an interview with the website 01net, Withings stated that, unlike Samsung, Ice Watch or Amazfit, it is not currently planning to invest in this new market.

While Withings is one of the market leaders in hybrid connected watches – with real needle dials – to measure its health data, the company does not see any investment in the connected health ring sector. In particular, Elizabeth Coleon, marketing manager of the French brand, points out that linked rings present several usage problems due to their format:

We look at them, it's interesting, especially for sleep monitoring. But for those who play sports, especially racquet sports, things immediately become more complicated. […] The format is not as compatible with activities as one might think. We therefore continue to pay attention to the topic, but do not consider this solution to be more interesting than our watches.

Miniaturization, which, according to Withings, is losing reliability

Even if Withings sees the increase in connected rings as an incentive for health measurements on the part of users, the manufacturer does not currently believe in this format, which raises several concerns for the different sensors: “It is difficult to be able to do everything in a clock integrated, integrated into a ring.” It is clear that so far only a few networked rings deliver measurements as reliably as networked watches.

With the Oura Ring 3, Oura offers the most reliable model to date, especially for measuring heart rate, but most competing rings still offer very variable, if not imaginative, measurements. We still don't know whether established players like Samsung – with its Galaxy Ring – or Amazfit – with its Helio Ring – can do better than the Finnish company.

During her interview with 01net, Withings' marketing director also took stock of the brand's other projects. In particular, we learn that Withings does not intend to launch a connected watch with a larger screen, that the U-Scan urinalysis sensor will only arrive in the second half of the year – a year and a half after its announcement – like the one connected to BeamO Thermometer. Dwarf planets at the edge of the solar system could hide oceans

For several decades, scientists have gradually become aware of the geological activity of the small icy bodies in our solar system. Evidence for the presence of inner oceans has been found, for example, on Jupiter's moon Europa and Saturn's moon Enceladus, which consist of water kept liquid by internal heat. In a new study, a team of planetologists shows that Eris and Makémake, two dwarf planets in the Kuiper Belt and supposedly “icy,” may actually be showing geological activity because their surfaces have recently been renewed.

While many scientists focus on a star's habitable zone, where water can exist in a liquid state on a planet's surface, to search for worlds where life is possible, a lot of work has been done in recent decades showing that Liquid water this could exist beneath the surface of icy moons in the outer solar system, such as Europa, a moon of JupiterJupiter, or Enceladus, a moon of SaturnSaturn. If the latter have a cold surface due to their great distance from the Sun, planetary scientists suspect internal geological activity there, allowing sufficient heat production for a layer of liquid water (and other elements in still small concentrations) to persist beneath their frozen crust.

Are the icy worlds in the farthest reaches of the solar system dormant?

There are even more distant ice worlds, such as the dwarf planets Eris or Makemake, which orbit in the Kuiper Belt and beyond. The latter is located well outside the orbit of NeptuneNeptune, at a distance from the Sun that varies between 30 and 55 astronomical units. With a diameter of 2,326 kilometers, ErisEris is the most massive of the dwarf planets discovered to date, with a mass almost 27% greater than that of PlutoPluto (which is, however, slightly larger). Due to its high mass, scientists suspect that it consists mostly of rock covered by a thin layer of ice. Makémake is about 1,430 kilometers in diameter, making it the third largest known trans-Neptunian object.

Because they are so far from the Sun's heat, astronomers have long viewed these worlds as cold and inactive. But based on observations from the James Webb Space Telescope, a team of scientists suspects that the two dwarf planets are actually geologically active. The isotopic composition of its surface actually appears to indicate relatively recent renewal on the geologic time scale of geological time. They present their results in the magazine Icarus.

Icy oceans beneath the surface of trans-Neptunian dwarf planets?

The team of scientists analyzed data collected by the James Webb Space Telescope as it analyzed the frozen surfaces of the two dwarf planets. More specifically, his instruments determined the isotopic composition of the methane molecules present on the surface. Methane consists of one atom of carboncarbon and four atoms of hydrogenhydrogen, the most abundant element in the universeuniverse. However, certain methane molecules can contain deuterium instead of hydrogen: it is a stable isotope of hydrogen that, unlike it, contains a neutron neutron. According to scientists, deuterium likely formed during the Big Bang; Determining the relative concentrations of deuterium and hydrogen in methane molecules can thus allow an estimate of their origin and the conditions under which they were formed.

And the team's results are clear: the D/H ratio (which quantifies the relative concentrations of deuterium and hydrogen in methane molecules) observed in the methane molecules on the surface of icy dwarf planets is weaker than those discovered inside comets, for example unchanged since its creation. According to scientists, this is evidence that the methane present on the surfaces of Eris and Makemaké was generated and released to the surface by internal geological processes after their formation. According to their data, they therefore have a relatively hot rocky core, which probably derives its energy from the decay of radioactive elements and enables the formation of methane molecules. Their results also suggest that if these two planets had high concentrations of methane during their formation, it has likely been emitted since then. So if their rocky cores produce enough heat, could these two dwarf planets harbor an ocean of liquid water? Japanese company launches probe to examine space debris

A Japanese company announced Monday the successful launch of what it believes will be the first spacecraft tasked with studying the ever-increasing and potentially hazardous waste in orbit. The mission of Astroscale-Japan's Active Debris Removal (Adras-J) is to find and examine the remains of a Japanese H-IIA rocket that has been floating in space for 15 years, private Japanese company Astroscale said. The probe was launched from New Zealand at 3:52 a.m. on the night of Sunday to Monday (Sunday at 3:52 p.m. in Switzerland). Astroscale “has successfully established contact (…) and is ready to start operations,” project manager Eijiro Atarashi is quoted as saying in a press release.

The exact orbital position of the upper stage of the H-IIA rocket, launched by the Japanese Space Agency (Jaxa) in 2009 and the size of a bus, is not known. However, its estimated location is determined based on observation data from Earth. Adras-J will approach “from a safe distance” and then collect footage to assess the structure’s movements and condition. This spacecraft was selected for the first phase of a Jaxa program aimed at removing large debris of Japanese origin in collaboration with the private sector.

A million dangerous pieces of debris

Waste such as spent satellites, rocket parts and collision debris has been piling up since the beginning of the space age, and the problem has only gotten worse in recent decades. The European Space Agency (ESA) estimates that there are around a million pieces of satellite or rocket debris in orbit larger than a centimeter, large enough to “disable a spacecraft.”

To clean up space, one possible solution could be to use a laser beam that can propel the debris into a new orbit, where a “space destroyer” would collect it via a magnet. On Saturday, Japan successfully launched its new heavy H3 launch vehicle, after two initial failures last year. And at the end of January, the archipelago became the fifth country to successfully land on the moon with its uninhabited Slim probe.

Microsoft is working with Israeli startups to develop pesticide and irrigation technologies to ease global food shortages.

The tech giant will connect them with its vast network of contacts to help them find new markets and collaborations.

More than 40 Israeli startups were slated to collaborate, with the first two – Projini and Saturas – already working with Microsoft.

Projini is developing herbicides using AI technologies traditionally used in the pharmaceutical industry, and Saturas has developed a sensor that is embedded in the trunks of trees, vines and plants to determine the water status of crops.

The partnership program is led by Start-Up Nation Central (SNC), a non-profit organization that promotes Israeli innovators to help solve global challenges.

Microsoft will also explore integrating Israeli solutions into its cloud-based, agriculture-focused business tools.

“Israel's agritech industry is well advanced in data, software and connectivity, offering Microsoft incredible potential in the growing field of data-driven agriculture,” said Avi Hasson, CEO of startup Nation Central.

The Nikkei moves away from its record level due to the decline in technology stocks – February 19, 2024 at 03:38 a.m

Japan's Nikkei stock average moved away from a record high on Monday, weighed down by microchip-related stocks, after U.S. stocks suffered losses on Friday.

Nintendo also crashed after media reports said that the successor to its Switch gaming console would only be released in early 2025 instead of the end of 2025.

The benchmark Nikkei index fell 0.37% to 38,344.91 at 0221 GMT, after hitting 38,865.06 on Friday. It was just 93 points away from the historic record set on the last trading day of 1989, at the height of Japan's economic bubble.

The negative impact of technology stocks was confirmed by the better performance of the Topix index, which rose by 0.09%.

There were also fewer transactions due to the presidential holiday in the US, which likely kept foreign investors away.

The Nikkei is already up a whopping 14.6% this year and technical indicators warn of overheating.

Its relative strength index (RSI) is currently around 74.1 and has been crossing the 70 threshold for a week, indicating an overbought market.

The Nikkei volatility index hit its highest level in a month on Friday.

“Unless there is a new catalyst, it seems difficult to push prices back to record highs,” said Maki Sawada, strategist at Nomura Securities.

She also pointed out that rising U.S. bond yields, particularly in technology stocks, were offsetting support from the weak yen.

Chip sector heavyweights Advantest and Tokyo Electron were the biggest drag on the Nikkei, losing 77.5 and 39 index points, down 4% and 1.2% respectively.

However, Nintendo saw the largest percentage decline with a decline of 6.7%.

Conversely, SoftBank Group, an investor in artificial intelligence-focused startups, boosted the Nikkei index by 20 points, up 1.3%, according to a recent report.
