The head of the Wagner group also threatened to betray Russia in favor of Ukraine

247 In January, the owner of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, made an extraordinary offer to Ukraine during the battle for the city of Bakhmut. According to a Washington Post report, he suggested that if Ukrainian commanders withdrew their troops from the Bakhmut area, he would provide information on Russian troop positions that Ukraine could use for an attack. The suggestion was forwarded by Prigozhin to his contacts in the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Directorate, with whom he maintained secret communications during the war. The leaked information is part of previously unreleased US intelligence documents on chat platform Discord.

Prigozhin, owner of the Wagner Group, was publicly at odds with Russian military commanders, claiming they had failed to equip and supply troops who had been critical in supporting Moscow’s war effort. However, he is also an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who may view Prigozhin’s offer to trade the lives of Wagner fighters for Russian soldiers as treason. It is not clear from the leaked document which Russian troop positions Prigozhin intended to disclose.
