The Steelers blocked two of their defensemen shortly before free agency began. The day after re-signing reserve strongback Miles Killebrew to a two-year contract, Pittsburgh signed reserve cornerback Arthur Molet through Jan Rapoport of the NFL Network to a two-year contract.

Pittsburgh signed both players during the offseason. A five-year veteran, Maulet broke into the NFL with the Saints before spending less than half a season with Indianapolis and two seasons with the Jets. During his first year with the Steelers, Molet recorded a career-high 47 tackles and also recorded his first career fumble. He also started two games for the Steelers, who finished ninth in the NFL in passing yards allowed. The maulet was also a staple of the Pittsburgh Special Forces units.

Killebrew, a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, joined the Steelers after five years with the Lions. A prized shooter, Killebrew earned an All-Pro vote for his role on special teams.

The Steelers are expected to have roughly $30 million in free space (a number that could rise in the coming days) at the start of free agency. The Steelers can use free agency to strengthen their offensive and defensive lines, receiving and secondary. Pittsburgh may re-sign several other free agents, including fellow defensemen Terrell Edmunds, Akello Witherspoon and Joe Hayden.

Pittsburgh is also looking for a quarterback to challenge Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins for the starting quarterback title next year. The Steelers will also acquire an experienced quarterback as free agents or during the draft next month. Pittsburgh, eliminated from the playoffs in the wild card round after a 9-7-1 regular season, has the 20th overall pick in the draft.
