San Salvador, March 13 (Prensa Latina) We await justice for a crime against humanity committed against four journalists from our country in El Salvador 41 years ago, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Central America Christine Pirenne said today.
On the 41st anniversary of the murder of four journalists from the Netherlands in El Salvador on March 17, 1982, Pirenne pointed out in a message on social networks that important steps had been taken in the previous year, when two of the living murder suspects were arrested and a third was sought as extradition to the United States.
He thanked the efforts of the next of kin to bring about justice, the courage of the judge and other authorities involved, as well as the NGOs Comunicándonos, the Salvadoran Association for Human Rights (Asdehu) and the Impunity Roundtable, who seek justice, truth and non-repetition of these facts.
“For the Kingdom of the Netherlands, this case is still important today because we want justice, because a crime against humanity cannot go unpunished and because journalists today have the right to carry out their work in safety,” the diplomat noted.
I am confident that the case will be taken forward and justice will be achieved, the ambassador stressed during a week of commemoration that included various activities, including an exhibition on 16 activist Jehanne van Woerkom at the Museum of Words and Images (MUPI).
The exhibition is sponsored by Fundación Comunicándonos, Adehu, MUPI and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Among the activities also stands out the placement of a flower offering on the 17th at the Monument to Memory and Truth in Cuscatlán Park in this capital by Ambassador Pirenne and a subsequent press conference on the progress of the case.
