Three patients died in a hospital fire in Austria on Tuesday, which led to the evacuation of around 90 patients, a spokeswoman for the facility in Modling, south of Vienna, told AFP.
“The cause of the disaster could not yet be clarified with certainty,” she said, while incidents of this kind are very rare in the wealthy Alpine country of 9 million people.
According to a statement from the regional health agency, the fire broke out around 1am (Monday 11pm GMT) in a room at the hospital center and spread quickly.
The fire brigade sent 33 vehicles and around 170 men to the scene of the accident. A Red Cross team also intervened.
The fire was brought under control after two hours and the uninjured patients were transferred to other facilities.
An investigation has been launched.
