Ukrainian state takes control of several companies ‘of strategic importance’

Prime Minister Denis Chmygal announced the requisition of several heavy industries that will take part in the war effort.

The Ukrainian state will take control of several companies “of strategic importance” to support the war effort, including hydrocarbon producer Ukrnafta and aircraft maker Motor Sich, the government said on Monday.

“The decision was made to expropriate the assets of strategically important companies and bring them into state ownership,” Secretary of Ukraine’s Security Council Oleksiy Danilov told a news conference. “Once martial law is lifted, these assets can be returned to their owners or their value restored,” he said.

In addition to Motor Sich and Ukrnafta, the state also took control of Zaporozhtransformator, a company specializing in the manufacture of reactors, the truck manufacturer AvtoKraz and the oil refinery company Ukrtatnafta. “The assets of these five companies are managed by the Department of Defense to meet the urgent needs of the armed forces. It’s about supplying fuel and lubricants, repairing military equipment and weapons,” said Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiï Reznikov.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has been heavily dependent on Western arms supplies and financial support from the US and EU.
