US elections 2024: Trump worries Canadians

Canadians fear the consequences of another Trump term as the next U.S. election approaches, and half believe the U.S. could become an authoritarian state if the former president is re-elected.

This emerges from a survey published on Monday by the Angus Reid Institute. Two-thirds of Canadians surveyed fear that American democracy “cannot survive another four years” under Trump’s presidency.

Half even believe that the United States could become an authoritarian state.

A new Biden-Trump duel

Three in five people (62%) believe the United States would be “much worse off” if Trump wins the next U.S. presidential election, which takes place on November 5th. Conversely, 22% of Canadians surveyed believe that the country's situation will improve.

If Biden wins a second term, Canadians tend to believe the situation in the United States will be better (34%), and a third (33%) think his re-election “will have no impact.”

“Trump himself has publicly said he is considering 'retaliation' if he wins again, after being impeached twice in his first four years and continuing to claim the last election was 'rigged,'” the Angus Reid Institute recalled.

The survey was conducted January 9-11, 2024 among 1,510 Canadians.
