“Venezuela strongly condemns the illegal tenders for oil blocks carried out by the Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana (blocks in competition since 2022 Guyana Licensing Round), as it intends to divest maritime areas up to the demarcation between the two countries,” it said in a statement from the Venezuelan government.
The document released by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry states: “The Government of Guyana has no sovereign rights over these maritime areas and therefore any action within its borders constitutes a violation of international law unless it is carried out through an agreement with Venezuela “.
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates that any illegal and arbitrary concession granted, has granted or intends to be granted by Guyana in the territories concerned is unacceptable and violates its sovereign rights,” the statement emphasizes.
According to the Venezuelan press, the government of Guyana recently received offers for eight of 14 oil blocks up for tender, including from North American company ExxonMobil.
The companies SISPRO INC, Total Energies EP Guyana BV, Qatar Energy Internacional E&P LLC and Petronas E&P Overseas Ventures SDN BHD (Malaysia) also expressed interest in the tender.
Also Delcorp Inc Guyana, the Saudis Watad Energy and Arabian Drillers, Liberty Petroleum Corporation from the USA, Cybele Energy Limited from Ghana as well as International Group Investment Inc and Montego Energy SA.
The tender began in December 2022 with a deadline of April 2023, which was later extended to September 12.
