The Montreal Alouettes announced Thursday that they have released defensive lineman Almondo Sewell, a key member of their effort to capture the Gray Cup in 2023, at his request.
The 37-year-old Sewell is therefore entering the free agent market and has the choice to sign with the team of his choice. His contract, signed in December 2022, runs for one more year.

After four seasons with the Edmonton Elks between 2016 and 2019, he moved to the Sparrows in 2021. In three seasons in Montreal, Sewell recorded 52 defensive tackles and nine sacks in 46 games.
Last year, the Jamaica native collected 14 defensive tackles in 16 duels.
He played a total of 117 games in the Canadian Football League during his career and won the Gray Cup twice.
A former NFL player in Montreal
At the same time, the Montreal club announced the signing of defensive back Linden Stephens.
The 28-year-old played three games for the NFL's Miami Dolphins during the 2019 season. The following year he played 13 games for the Seattle Seahawks.
The Ohio native was then drafted by the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL.
Stephens is a product of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, where he played in 44 games between 2014 and 2017, notably recording 92 tackles.
