'We are alarmed,' says White House after Taylor Swift's deepfake images emerge – IndiaTimes

NEW DELHI: In the last few months, artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes have created quite a stir on social networking sites, and for all the wrong reasons. Recently, explicit images of pop star Taylor Swift “alarmed” the White House.
White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre addressed reporters on Friday and said: “We are alarmed by reports of the spread of the … false image.”
She further explained that social media plays an important role in enforcing its own rules as it makes its independent decision on content to prevent the spread of misinformation and non-consensual, intimate images of real people.
Pierre expressed her disappointment at such images impacting women and making them the target of online harassment and also abuse.
“So the president, as you know, is committed to ensuring that we reduce the risk of general – generative AI that produces images, as through his recent executive order that we just – just announced last fall. So this problem exists.” “Not new. And it's something the Biden-Harris administration has prioritized since day one. We took this very seriously. This is also alarming for us,” said the press spokesman.
Singer Taylor Swift's pornographic images spread online this week, sparking backlash among her fans and renewed calls from federal lawmakers for social media companies to enforce their rules.
Recognizing the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence and AI-generated content, Rep. Joseph Morelle (D-N.Y.) introduced a bill last May that would make sharing deepfake pornography illegal.
President Biden signed a comprehensive executive order on artificial intelligence in October that focuses on leveraging the emerging technology and managing its risks.
The same incident was even witnessed in India where some deepfake images of actors Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif and Kajol Devgn were shared on social media platforms.
After the deepfakes appeared online, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced that it is working on decisive measures.
