The new king prefers Clarence House to the palace. The idea of awarding Windsor to William and Kate
There was a set routine with Elizabeth: Buckingham Palace during the week, Windsor at the weekend, Balmoral in the summer and Sandringham at Christmas. Everything will change with Carlo. Not only because it’s based in Clarence House, but also because he doesn’t particularly love Windsor Castle, which he wants to give to William and Kate. The new king also already has a country residence for the weekend and his beloved Highgrove, the Gloucestershire estate which he has transformed over the years into an eco-sustainable oasis. A curiosity that Highgrove is part of the Duchy of Cornwall inherited from William: hence the King will be a tenant farmer to his son at weekends.
Another possible residence for part of the year is Birkhall, the Queen Mother’s former home on the Balmoral estate; while in Wales the King owns Llwynywermod Cottage. But one thing is certain: Carlo is a cost-conscious person and will increasingly open his buildings to the public to cover the costs.
As for Buckingham Palace, an increasingly “museum” destiny awaits; On the other hand, after the death of George VI, Elizabeth and Philip, who, like Charles now, lived at Clarence House, also initially resisted the idea of moving there: and were only persuaded by pressure from the court. And finally, only since Queen Victoria, so relatively new, has it become the official residence of sovereigns. But change is happening now.
