Chilean prosecutors confirmed that they are investigating the alleged kidnapping of Ronald Ojeda Moreno, a former Venezuelan military man who has been living in the southern country since late 2023. The man, who served as a lieutenant colonel in the army, was involved in a series of turbulent events against the government of Nicolás de Maduro before seeking refuge in Santiago.

Who is Ronald Ojeda Moreno?
The history of Ronald Ojeda Moreno is distinguished by his participation in a Group of 33 soldiers demoted and expelled from the Venezuelan Armed Forces (FF. AA.) last January 24th. These uniformed men were accused of conspiring against Nicolás Maduro's regime, according to a statement from the Ministry of People Power for the Defense of Venezuela. The allegations included planning criminal and terrorist acts, including the alleged assassination attempt on President Maduro, which was deemed a “treason.”
After escaping from prison Green bouquet of flowers, where he was imprisoned along with other political prisoners, Ojeda came to Chile in search of safety and freedom. However, his turbulent past followed him to the South American country, where he continued to be a critical voice against the Maduro regime. He even took part in protests in front of La Moneda Palace, demanding the release of political prisoners in Venezuela.

What did the Chilean authorities say about the kidnapping of Ronald Ojeda Moreno?
The Undersecretary of Interior of Chile, Manuel Monsalve, confirmed the kidnapping of Ojeda and detailed that a group of five people posed as PDI officials to carry out the kidnapping. According to preliminary information, the former soldier was taken from his house in his underwear and placed in a vehicle with an unknown address.
The incident has sparked a series of investigations at both Ojeda's residence and Ojeda's residence North Coast Highway, where a vehicle related to the kidnapping was found. Items found in the car, including clothing that could belong to the PDI and a 9mm pistol magazine, have added complexity to the investigation.

Chilean authorities have expressed their determination to solve the case and ensure the safety of Ojeda and his family. However, suspicions of possible intervention by the Maduro government in the kidnapping have heightened diplomatic tensions between Chile and Venezuela.
