NFL chief executive Mike Tannenbaum believes the San Francisco 49ers should put the brakes on trade talks with Jimmy Garopolo. While most speculate that the quarterback veteran will not be on Kyle Shanahan’s list in the first week of the 2022 season, Tannenbaum believes parting with Garopolo would be a costly mistake.
“Right now, when you look at the league landscape, there are probably at least a dozen teams that need quarterbacks,” Tannenbaum told ESPN Get Up on Thursday (h / t Chris Rosvoglou of The Spun). “And there just aren’t enough of them. And Greene (hosted by Mike Greenberg), we’ll be sitting here maybe in three or four weeks and saying, “I can’t believe Quarterback X or Mitch Trubyski figured that out.” And if I’m 49ers, I’m not trading. Jimmy G under no circumstances. “
The argument is that the 49ers earn more with Garopolo than without him. This is true. Shanahan is 31-14 with Garopolo as his starting quarterback. He is 8-28 without Garopolo.
“You’ve been to the Super Bowl for the last two seasons, [two] NFC Championship Game[s], on a game far from returning there this year, “continued Tanenbaum.” Why would you move away from it? This is a season of 17 games. You’ve seen so many teams lose quarterbacks.
“I do not trade with Jimmy J. [R]back. Let Trey Lance come. Maybe he’s beating him. Why not act from a position of strength and not weakness? “
General manager John Lynch did not rule out the possibility of holding Garopolo for another season. He believes the 49ers might be able to do so when it comes to the pay ceiling.
“If we have the two again and let them compete, then we’ll be happy to do that,” Lynch told NBC Sports Bay Area. – And we are able to do this with our hat.
Lynch admits that keeping Garopolo will limit how aggressive the 49ers can be this off-season, but the team has anticipated a number of scenarios.
Lynch added: “The bottom line is, whatever that combination is, we want to be a better football team or give ourselves a chance to be a better football team next year.

Athletic predicts 49ers to exchange Jimmy Garopolo with Steelers by the end of the month
Don’t count Tim Kawakami of The Athletic among those who wildly predict that Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers will be in charge of the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. Instead, the longtime writer firmly believes that Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will stick to the plan when they swapped many drafts to move up and choose the No. 3 Trey Lance quarterback as their overall pick. This move started the countdown of Jimmy Garopolo’s time in the Gulf region. The quarterback veteran had to stay for a maximum of one more season, but Lance was the future. San Francisco is now expected to part with Garopolo, officially announcing that the Lance era is beginning now. The only real question is when Garopolo will be sent by Santa Clara and to whom. Trey Lance’s progress has led Sheffer to wonder if the 49ers will trade Jimmy Garopolo
Most expect Jimmy Garopolo to wear another uniform when the 2022 season begins. The San Francisco 49ers have last year’s No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, waiting on his wings. The move from Garopolo to Lance will create significant space for a salary cap – money that could be used to shut down stars like Nick Boza and Deebo Samuel. Not everyone is sure that Lance is ready to start and lead the attack on Kyle Shanahan. Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana said before the Super Bowl that he heard Lance was not ready to start, suggesting the 49ers were holding on to Garopolo. “I don’t think Trey is still ready to play, myself, even after talking to some of them
Prisco for the 49ers and Jimmy Garopolo: “I don’t think Trey Lance is ready … I wouldn’t replace him”
ESPN’s Adam Shefter does not believe the San Francisco 49ers trading with Jimmy Garopolo this offseason should be considered a “lock”, pointing to the possibility that last year’s No. 3 overall, Trey Lance, may not be as ready as some think. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports called the interest in Garopolo “cool.” Another CBS Sports writer, Pete Prisco, doesn’t believe the 49ers should exchange Garopolo at all. He also has doubts about Lance’s progress. The 21-year-old quarterback spent the entire last season in support of Garopolo and has just started
The Athletic: 49ers to get serious about Jimmy Garopolo’s trade talks at Combine
NFL teams are preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine, preparing to explore the latest harvest of project prospects. San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch will speak to reporters from Indianapolis on Wednesday, March 2. If no move has been made yet, one of the topics of discussion will almost certainly be the status of quarterback Jimmy Garopolo, who most expect to change this out of season. Tim Kawakami of The Athletic recently predicted that the 49ers will eliminate Garopolo by the end of the month. Now the longtime writer believes that the schedule will be in the next few weeks, as trade discussions heat up at the plant. Interest in the veteran quarterback doesn’t seem to be as strong as originally thought. “After a hearing at the end of this week
