Wyndham Clark praises his attitude for ‘surreal’ US Open win
Wyndham Clark credits his first US Open win to his turbulent fourth-round poise.
Wyndham Clark climbed to 13th in the official world golf rankings and is a fraction of a point behind Brooks Koepka after a breakthrough win at the US Open.
Clark was 241st in the world the day after the 2022 US Open but has recorded two wins – and more than $8 million in earnings – over the past six weeks.
Clark restrained Rory McIlroy at the Los Angeles Country Club. With a total of 10 under 270, Clark won by a single shot. On the 72nd hole, Clark hit a lag put from 60 feet to make tap-in par, sparking a source of emotion amid his celebrations on Sunday.
McIlroy failed in his attempt to end a nine-year major drought and is third in the current ranking behind Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm. Scheffler has 608.43 total points, Spaniard Rahm has 473.78 and Northern Ireland’s McIlroy is at 425.27.
Patrick Cantlay is No. 4, followed by Viktor Hovland (Norway), Xander Schauffele and Australian Cameron Smith.
Hovland, 25, won the Memorial Tournament last week and finished second in the PGA Championship.
Rickie Fowler has moved up to 35th – a 10-place lead – with an 86.88 points gain. He placed fifth at the US Open and had a streak of three consecutive top 10 finishes (Charles Schwab Challenge, Memorial).
